Sea of Bolivia – Ocean Access

Bolivian Access to the Sea

Bolivian Access to the Sea

Bolivia lost its access to the sea in the War of the Pacific, which was fought from 1879 to 1883.  Since that time, the country has remained land-locked, necessitating travel through Chile, to the port of Antofogasto on the Pacific Coast.

Bolivia has never renounced its struggle to regain its seaport.  There are yearly parades and demonstrations in Bolivia re-asserting the country’s right to ocean access.

The issue is fully explored in the book United States and the Bolivian Seacoast (Estados Unidos y el Mar Boliviano) by Jorge Gumucio Granier, PhD.  The entire text can be downloaded for FREE, in English and in Spanish, at http://www.boliviaweb.com/mar/
